South Asia Research Development Grant

This grant offers two ways to provide travel support for research in South Asia.

OPTION 1*
Planning meetings with research collaborators in India with the express aim of pursuing a joint grant proposal (for example, TAF, ISCs, IITs, ISRs, IUCAA, ITER)
OPTION 2*
Supporting an existing faculty-to faculty collaboration in a way that promises a significant advance in establishing or deepening a joint research project

*Notre Dame Mumbai will be pleased to support logistics where possible.

*This grant cannot be used to bring collaborators to South Bend. For this, please go to the Asia Guest Scholar/Artist Program

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Full-time regular faculy members of Notre Dame are eligible to apply
  • Open to all disciplines

Funding

  • Funding requests can be made up to $10,000

Application Guidelines

Applications will be submitted through NDG's submissions manager and should include:

  1. Proposal title
  2. ND project director (PD) name(s), department/center/institute affiliation(s) and email address(es)
  3. Indication of option being applied for (Option 1 or Option 2)
  4. Summary statement (option specific, 600 word limit):
    1. Option 1: Provide information on the South Asia researchers who will work on the proposal, what their institutions are, the ND PI’s history of engagement with them, the indicators suggesting that meetings might successfully result in a joint proposal which in turn may be successful in gaining joint funding. Indicate any joint funding mechanisms for which you are considering applying.
    2. Option 2: Summary of the research project and the South Asia institutions involved
  5. Total amount applied for in US dollars
  6. List of any other funding sources obtained, or being applied for, to support this research
  7. Proposed travel dates
  8. Justification for travel
  9. Planned activities and their locations
  10. A timeline for completion of travel
  11. Information about ways in which the applicant plans to support the continued development of the project/relationship
  12. Budget with justification
  13. Current abbreviated CV (3-page limit) for the ND applicant.
  14. Current abbreviated CV (3-page limit) for the any international investigators/collaborators
  15. Letter from anticipated partner(s) at international institution(s) indicating their willingness to meet for the designated purpose

South Asia Research Development Grant SAMPLE Application

Criteria

Well defined outcome must be anticipated such as the writing of a grant proposal, development of a new joint project or a significant clarification of direction on an existing project or joint publication.

Eligible Expenses

  • Airfare, ground transportation, visa costs (if applicable), accommodation, and per diem as outlined below
  • Hospitality expenses for convening grant writing meetings

Per Diem: Reimbursement for meals and incidental travel expenses in accordance with these per diem allowances:

  • 1-14 days - Up to 75% of US State Dept per diem for international travel
  • 15+ days – Up to 50% of US State Dept per diem for international travel
