Immigrant Heritage Month is observed in June to honor the diversity of those who have moved to the United States from their birth countries and highlight the ways they’ve enhanced American society and culture.

The U.S. is the top destination in the world for people moving from one country to another, according to the Pew Research Center. Census data show that more than 70 million people have migrated to the United States since 1965. They represent nearly all countries around the world. Today, the largest number of immigrants hail from Mexico and India. Nearly a century ago, the largest immigrant populations were from Germany and Italy.

Immigrants have traveled to the U.S. for many reasons over the years—including seeking work, an education, or an escape from persecution. And, in establishing new lives, their presence has influenced everything from art and cuisine, language and literature, and politics and the economy.
