Types of Agreements
Student Mobility
Student Mobility programs allow students (mostly undergraduates) from other universities and institutions to study at the University of Notre Dame, and allow students from the University of Notre Dame to study at other universities and institutions. During these 'exchanges', students can take classes and get involved in service, research, internships, or other specialty activities. These programs are typically supported by a Student Exchange Agreement with the partner school.
For questions regarding student mobility agreements and activities, please contact Hong Zhu at hzhu1@nd.edu.
Faculty Mobility
Faculty mobility creates new opportunities for faculty development, teaching, and research by enabling faculty to move between the University of Notre Dame and a partner school. They might trade places to teach, go on extended visits for training, or travel for conferences or sponsorships. The partnership can be reciprocal (two-way exchange of faculty) or non-reciprocal (one-way travel of faculty).

General Memorandum of Understanding
A General Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) serves as a formal framework to explore collaborative opportunities between the University of Notre Dame and an international partner institution.
The primary purpose of a general, university-wide, non-binding MOU is to indicate the University’s intent to collaborate with an institution abroad and to provide a framework for a range of academic activities, including:
- Visits and informal exchanges of faculty, scholars, and administrators in specific areas of education, research, and outreach
- Explore ways to cooperate in postgraduate education and training
- Organize joint conferences, symposia, or other meetings on subjects of mutual interest
- Exchange of academic information and materials
- Pursue avenues for undergraduate, graduate, and professional student mobility during the academic year or summer terms
- Explore the possibilities for developing joint research programs and collaborations
- Other exchange and cooperation programs to which both parties agree
For questions regarding general MOU agreements and activities, please contact Maggie Dankert at mdankert@nd.edu.
Joint Research Grant Agreements
Joint research collaboration grant agreements provide competitive, co-funded seed funding to foster high-impact research between University of Notre Dame faculty and global partner institutions. Supported jointly by Notre Dame and international partner institutions, these initiatives deepen strategic academic ties, positioning joint research teams to produce co-authored publications, secure external funding, and achieve international recognition.
